POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Seton Hill University (Greensburg, PA) is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and results-oriented attorney for the position of Staff Attorney in the Office of the General Counsel.  This position provides broad legal advisory support to the Vice President and General Counsel in managing the broad range of legal matters impacting University administrators, faculty, staff and students.  This is a unique entry-level in-house position that provides the opportunity to learn the many areas of substantive law in a higher education setting, as well as gain insight and develop judgment from direct and hands-on participation in client meetings, judicial and administrative proceedings. Although this is a campus-based position, some remote work arrangements are negotiable in accordance with the University’s Remote Work Policy. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing general legal advisory support on the broad scope of legal issues handled by the Office of the General Counsel with particular focus in the following areas: contracts, student affairs and compliance with University policies and federal, state and local laws and regulations (including but not limited to NCAA, Title IX, Clery Act, FERPA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans With Disabilities Act).
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school;
  • Admission to practice law in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (or gaining admission within one (1) year of employment);
  • 0-3 years of related legal experience, including:
    • Negotiating, drafting, and advising related to various legal documents, including contracts and correspondence and policy documents;
    • Conducting complex research, preparing memoranda, and rendering oral and written advice on complex and novel legal issues; 
    • Analyzing and interpreting the implementation of policy, constitutional, statutory and administrative rule requirements; and
    • Preparing, reviewing, and analyzing documents related to subpoenas, document requests, and/or litigation.
  • Self-starter and detail oriented;
  • Exceptional organizational, time-management, and technology skills;
  • Ability to establish trust and rapport with administrators, faculty, staff and students;
  • Ability to support and strengthen the Catholic mission of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill and Seton Hill University; and
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially within a University community reflecting a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.

 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience monitoring and enforcement of compliance with policies, federal and state laws, and regulations;
  • Experience preparing and presenting training materials on various topics;
  • Experience preparing and presenting various written and oral communications before internal constituents, governmental agencies and external organizations; 
  • Experience reviewing information and recommending strategic and tactical initiatives in relation to pending or anticipated legal actions;
  • Experience supporting and advising various committees and working groups.
